Normally, you secrete when you give birth or 1-2 days before. If milk is coming out off your breast, it is called an abnormal situation; it is called galactorrhea (in Greek gala: milk; rhoia: flow).
Researchers say that %50 of the galactorrhea events’ reasons have not found yet and %25 of the events’ reasons are pituitary tumors called prolactin. Although these tumors are generally benign, they secrete prolactin hormone which regulates milk production. Galactorrhea can depend on various reasons in the left %25.
Galactorrhea’s (milk coming out off the breast) symptoms:
-Generally, whitish and greeny flow from both nipple
-It can be with amenorrhea
Galactorrhea’s (milk coming out off the breast) diagnosis: Doctor will examine your breast (to be sure that there is no bloody flow which is seen with cancer) and the liquid out off the breast. Your medically history shows that your galactorrhea is whether a side effect of a drug or not. To determine your prolactin level, blood tests and hypothalamus and pituitary’s CT scan (computerized tomography) can be made.
When galactorrhea is not resulted from a pituitary tumor, it does not threaten your health. This kind of tumors develops slowly and some of them stay whatever itself at the end. Mostly, drug treatment results successfully. If it is failed, surgery or radiotherapy can be used.
Galactorrhea’s (milk coming out off the breast) drug treatment: thyroxin is given for hypothyroidism. If you have pituitary tumor or no explanation can be taken from the test for galactorrhea, your doctor most probably will give you bromocriptine to reduce prolactin and to shrink the tumor. Bromocriptine generally treats the galactorrhea.
Galactorrhea’s (milk coming out off the breast) surgical treatment: Surgery can be necessary in a big pituitary tumor. Because, these tumors can develop again. You can need bromocriptine treatment and radiotherapy.
