Influenza and breastfeeding

Influenza and breastfeeding

A mother should be so careful when she has breastfeeding. Because, if she gets influenza, it can pass to the infant. The mother should put a surgical mask to cover their face. They should also maintain hygiene whenever they come close to their baby especially hygienic hands when feeding them. They should practice such preventive measures until the symptoms are seen on the mother. It is recommended to the mother to take anti-influenza medications as babies at small age don’t have strong immune system to fight harmful infections. Take advice from your doctor for the type of medicines you should take so that it doesn’t affect your child when breast feeding. Generally, influenza mothers do not have to worry about the infection getting spread to their babies via breastfeeding.

The milk of the mother is made in such a way that they have the antibodies to fight against various infections. In case, the mother is not in a condition to breastfeed their infant due to influenza then expressed milk is a good option. So make sure that you continue breastfeeding your baby irrespective of influenza, as it has no relation with the health and wellbeing of the baby.
