Bulimia nervosa disease


 
The desire to be slim can sometimes leads to dangerous consequences. The importance of eating disorders has been understood more recently. Especially in the 20th century being attractive has been related with being skin. This type of relation has played a major role for the increase of eating disorders. Women have begun to focus on body image and shape. There has been created an ideal body shape. This ideal body shape does not include real and healthy criterias and is under normal weight standards. Women have begun to deprieve themselves of food in order to have this ideal body shape. As a result of unhealthy diets, eating disorders and even death for the sake of beauty have been more frequent.
Today eating diorders can be classified into three categories. These are anorexia nervosa, not eating, eating addiction, excessive eating, and bulimia nervosa, eating too much and then vomiting. Bulimia nervosa may also seem as a result of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, substance addiction or psychological disorders. The patient always consumes high calorie foods in a short time without chewing. This also brings a variety of stomach disorders. After eating the dinner, the patient feels guilty and tries to get rid of excessive calories by vomiting, staying hungry, exercising excessively or taking drugs.
Generally the people with bulimia have serious concerns about their weight and body shapes. Because of vomiting, there occurs tooth decay. Repeated vomiting causes the reduction of stomach acid needed for digestion. If the person use laxatives at the same time, the changes in the body chemistry may cause dangerous results such as addiction. Vomiting can also lead to reflux problems, gastritis and pancreatitis disorders. The patients are generally depressed because of swelling of the throat and stomach ailments.
Bulimic behavior may vary in individuals. Some people may vomit immediately after eating. Some people show normal eating behaviours in society, but they may show bulimic behavior when they are alone. While some of them do not take this issue seriously, the others may be in fear or hatred because of their situation.
According to the World Health Organization, the diagnostic criterias of bulimia nervosa are an irresistable desire for eating more, eating episodes of consuming large amount of food quickly, excessive exercise, vomiting after meals, go hungry for certain periods, using laxatives, and fear of obesity.
